If the high-end database market is slowing, and more and more companies are going with MS SQL server, ORCL may have problems growing at a rate that would support its high PE.

I have friends who work at ORCL who have commented that SQL server is stiff competition because of its low price. They complain that ORCL is such a better product, people will end up paying in the long run, ect.

My response to them is that there are a lot more Camry's sold than Lexis. Price has become a relevant factor for many companies. As SQL server's performance improves(clearly it is not equal to ORCL v*), ORCL will come under more and more pressure from mid-size companies.

I am not saying that this company is dead, just that it is facing more competition than it has in a long time.

A positive is ORCL is attacking vertical markets. I just don't know how quickly this approach can make up for slowing core database sales.

Sam, re I have seen stocks tank before on bad news, but cant remember ever seeing such stability in price after the gap down open.

How about INTC recently. Gapped down 5 pts to 86-87, stayed in that range all day, trading around 62.5M shares.

Also this past Feb(?) 97, Cascade Communications (CSCC) gapped down over 20 pts and traded at 41-42, trading around 41M shares if I remember right.

FWIW, both INTC and CSCC continued on down from there in ensuing days. I'm not saying this will happen with ORCL, because I don't follow the stock.

Sam hi, that is the best explanation that I've heard since this fiasco. It's to bad for them suckers, sure glad I wasn't one of them and I don't feel sorry for them either. Just want to say thanks for the great buy. Mark Fowler

>What a classic Market Maker play.

I agree with you to an extent that MMs are involved in such a huge drop. But I can't comprehend MMs sitting with such huge cash (let's just say billions) waiting for this opportunity and collecting hundreads of millions of shares of one company in one day....
