OC-192 swiching capacity

If you want to find the answers to your questions you should visit the CIENA web page. If you look at there products you will see that OC-192 is not so good, because they offering 4 times the capacity as Nortel does. Since WDM works only on Layer 1 it's transparent to the higher layers (IP,ATM,Sonet, SDH). Simalar WDM products are available from LU, Ericsson and Alcatel to name a few. Ascend is not affected at all by this. The only losers are the SDH,Sonet suppliers because the ATM interfaces can be conneted directly to the WDM whitout passing SDH or Sonet.

Hi Sector, WDM stands for wavelength Division Multiplexing.
2 fiberscome together at a prism (a diffraction grating), each w/ a different energies in different bands, then combined onto a single shared fiber for transmission to a destination, where thay are split again. The coupler is a star, with light from every input fiber illuminating the star. Although spreading energy over n outputs dilutes it by a factor of n, such systems are practical for hundreds of channels. IBM first came out w/ a WDM switch, now NT. LU has been working on the WDM tech, but no product yet. LU also worked on an optical computer for a decade now. There is still a lot of single fiber networks for which ASND can make money. MCI is one of the very few, who have multi-fiber network. WDM is mainly an optical switch which neither CSCO, COMS, BAY, nor ASND have any expertise in.
