My theory is that Compaq doesn't want to confuse the buyers evaluating $999 K6-233 and $799 MediaGXm 220.

You hit the nail right on the head. A 220 beats a 200.
Soon a 250 will beat the 233. That's the way the average consumer will look at it.

BTW, if the PR rating was true to form for the MX the 6x86MX-200 should have a rating of 220 at least.
