O/T befrank, thank you for the pointer. I was aware of the plug-ins for the start menu. I was mainly looking for solutions for my dad, who has XP on his machine he only uses for e-mail and web surfing, and I thought Win8 too counter intuitive for a senior citizen to learn. I'll probably just get him an old refurfished desktop with Win7 so it's close to the same, and the learning curve is far shorter.

It seems an awful lot of the computers the schools give our kids these days have Google docs, chrome, etc on them, but still are Windows based. I wonder how long that lasts before it migrates to Google Chrome, if it has not already.
