Kids can read us like a book! If you think that - my belief is that she is going to know you think that - not in so many words, but the felling that will not go away. Doesn't that set them up for failure? Some kids are harder to teach than others. Those little goody two shoes girls - or boys - that sit all day long and soak up knowledge are no smarter than many of the kid who say they hate school. What they are good at is sitting still and they might even have the type of brain that retains that information - BUT they can just as well be totally worthless in their ability to apply what they have learned to the real word. Real world problems. We all learn in different ways and at different speeds. That's what I think.

What I am focused on in my minds eye are the kids in the ghetto that do not know their potential. I want to save those kids. I have heard black guys say: "maybe college is not for the brothers". It makes my blood run cold when I hear that. I want to scream, you are as capable as any motherfucker out there. You just have to figure out how to do it. And I expect my society to lend a hand. You provide free pre school for little kids with a hot meal and watch what grows. Smart confident kids will sprout out of that. And they will be beautiful to watch as they manifest their bright destiny. We are all insecure. Kids are really insecure. And minorities in the ghetto are really really insecure and need a lot of attention. But given that attention they can not only do it, but come to like it. I went to the University of Washington for my graduate work. Is that one Ok on your list? My course of foreign relations with the Dean of the college had a reading list of 60 books and included all the foreign policy from the 1500's to today including the second WWII bombing patterns. I got the second highest grade in the class. And I did it with my shoes up. And the guy who beat me saw me as a ghetto kid. He was a foreign relations guy stationed in DC living in Chevy Chase. He was a relations guy with the Saudis. He saw me as a hippie clod as I wore climbing boots to class and was a stoner. He and I became best friends after that test.
