New York Mayor-elect Bill De Blasio says he wants his newly-announced transition committee to help "assemble a team that's devoted to building one great city where everyone shares in our prosperity."

Let's hope free speech isn't one of the subjects for which De Blasio seeks input.

New York University Muslim Chaplain Khalid Latif is among the 60 people chosen for what is largely a symbolic advisory appointment. In 2006, when deadly protests broke out in the Muslim world over cartoons depicting Islam's Prophet Muhammad, Latif led a campaign to stop the cartoons from being displayed at an NYU student discussion. He urged students to write to NYU administrators, and wrote to the university's president, ominously warning that the school could make itself a target for violenceif the program included the drawings.

"(T)he potential of what might happen after they (the cartoons) are shown is something else that should be considered and not taken lightly," Latif wrote.

"NYU has facilities all over the world and Muslims also live all over the world,"he added. People won't distinguish between the student group organizing the discussion panel and the university. "Rather, at that time all people will be thinking about is New York University and the decision it made…"

As a chaplain with influence over Muslim students, Latif could have used the opportunity to show that people can be offended but still defend free expression. He could have taken a clear stand against the violence and encouraged debate. He chose to stifle it instead.

The university capitulated and four blank pedestals were placed on the stage in protest.

Latif also is listed as a board member for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) New York chapterin the group's 2008 annual report. The FBI cut off all non-investigative communication with CAIR that year after evidence gathered in a terror-financing trial placed CAIR and two of its founders within a Hamas-support network in the United States.

De Blasio becomes mayor Jan. 1.

UPDATE: 4 Arrested In Brooklyn 'Knockout' Attacks...

.........................................................................
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police have arrested four [black] people in connection with an allege [black on white] “ knockout game” assault in Brooklyn.

“Knockout” attacks are when mobs of young [black] people randomly sucker-punch innocent [white] people for fun.

Around 2:45 a.m. Friday, a [white] 24-year-old Jewish man was surrounded by four [black] men and punched in the face on 18th Avenue in Boro Park, sources told CBS 2.

The [black] suspects fled, but were quickly apprehended and taken into police custody, sources said.

“I commend the excellent police work that we saw this morning,” Assemblyman Dov Hikind said in a statement. “I am grateful that these four [black] thugs are off the streets and am hopeful that they will be treated with the severity of the law. I urge continuing diligence in dealing with this issue.”

There have been seven so-called “knockout” or “polar bear” assaults in the Crown Heights and Midwood sections of Brooklyn since October, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Wednesday. The alternate name “polar bearing” comes from the fact that the victims are white.

Police patrols have been stepped up in central Brooklyn in response to the [black on white] incidents.

The [black on white] attacks are being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force.

Kelly said several [white] victims have not reported the [black on white] incidents because no robbery is involved.

“I would like to urge anyone who has been victimized by this to come forward and let us know,” said the police commissioner. “In order for us to respond, we have to have this information.”

On Thursday, a New York state legislator introduced a bill that would classify such attacks as a gang assault. Under the bill, attackers could face up to 25 years in prison and young people could also be charged as adults.
