She's in her eighties, and is now in an an Alzheimer's ward, at the beginning of her mental decline it was less obvious, she could sound intelligent when you talked to her but she easily fell prey to the scammers. They often target the elderly hoping to get someone who is no longer 100% mentally but is still managing their own money.

Another thing (more extortion than scam) I've heard about recently is ransomware. If your PC gets infected it encrypts certain types of data files (word processing files, PDFs, spreadsheet files, etc.) and demands that you pay to get them back. One common version currently is asking for half a bitcoin (currently half a bitcoin is around $425).
