Paradyne, Newmark Real Estate and Thorn Communications First to Deploy High-Speed, Low-Cost DSL-Based Services in New York City

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 1997-- -- Thorn installs Paradyne's Hotwire(tm) products for

high-speed, low-cost Internet access in high rise buildings, spurring hi-tech growth in New York's downtown area. --

Paradyne, a pioneer and leader in digital network access, today announced that its Hotwire Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) team has collaborated with Thorn Communications Inc. and Newmark & Company Real Estate, Inc. for the first deployment of DSL-based services for low-cost, high-speed Internet access in New York City. Paradyne president and CEO Andrew May claims the group has "trumped" its competitors, who have announced intentions to deploy DSL in 1998.

Thorn is deploying Paradyne's Rate Adaptive DSL Hotwire equipment in select buildings in the downtown Manhattan financial district and already has a number of customers utilizing the high-speed service. Thorn, currently a HotWire Partners Program member and an Internet Service Provider (ISP), has filed for status as a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC). Thorn's first installation went live October 1 at the 55 John Street location in Manhattan, and the first Newmark installation at 630 Ninth Avenue is slated to go live the first quarter of 1998. Thorn, is working with area landlords and major property management firms such as Newmark to begin immediate deployment in another four buildings in the area.

According to May, previous deployments of Paradyne's Hotwire products solved the "last mile" bottleneck for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) by providing high-speed, low-cost Internet access over existing copper telephone lines, which currently reach virtually 98 percent of all U.S. homes and businesses. This latest deployment with Thorn Communications focuses on office buildings and complexes with shared tenant facilities. In these scenarios, the landlord owns the copper. With access to the Central Office (CO), the landlord can provide DSL-based services to its commercial and residential tenants. Newmark welcomed the new services as the latest addition to its "Plug 'n' Go" hi-tech amenities and services.

"One of the main reasons Thorn customer and software developer Dynamo Development Inc. selected 55 John Street was the high-speed Internet access," said Dynamo Principal Dmitry Grinberg. "We jumped from 56k to 256-512k Internet access and plan to upgrade within six months to even greater speeds. With Thorn's RADSL (Rate Adaptive DSL) service, we won't need to buy equipment or incur upgrade costs. We'll simply pay the increased service fee for the higher access speed."

"Thorn is working with Newmark and Paradyne to offer fast, economical and value-added DSL services to several commercial high-rise and campus locations and residents within those same complexes," said Anthony Spina, president of Thorn Communications. "By using the existing copper infrastructure, Hotwire delivers services at up to 2.56 Million Bits Per Second (Mbps) -- 20 times faster than ISDN (at 128 Kbps) -- for high-speed Internet access and other applications for the tenants in these buildings at prices well below what customers usually pay using traditional technologies."

Newmark, led by senior managing director Jonathan Rudes, specializes in overseeing the construction and leasing of pre-built, pre-wired space in renovated buildings located mainly in downtown New York's emerging "Silicon Alley." According to Mr. Rudes, "Our objective is to create units ranging in size from 1,400 to 3,200 square feet for small to mid-sized high-tech emerging companies requiring instant connectivity and a community environment."

PRODUCT FEATURES & BENEFITS

Thorn Communications is deploying high-speed DSL services using Paradyne's Hotwire product family, including DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) and endpoint DSL modems. Hotwire DSLAMs support Internet Protocol (IP), Frame Relay, ATM and Channelized (Nx64) services on a single platform. This multiservices approach enables Thorn to deliver new DSL services by simply adding a new card to the DSLAM. Paradyne offers two classes of DSLAMs including a stackable architecture to support an "invest-as-you-grow" deployment that starts at less than $6,000 U.S. list. Interoperating with Hotwire DSLAMs are multiple endpoints engineered to support specific symmetric and asymmetric services ranging from $495 for a single user 1 Mbps symmetric endpoint on up to $1195 for a fully SNMP-managed, 7 Mbps symmetric and asymmetric multiple-user device. Wrapped around the Hotwire product family is Paradyne's preeminent network management suite which provides a complete management solution for all Paradyne products, including Hotwire devices.

PRICING

Thorn is offering 2.56 Mbps service to their commercial customers for $500 per month for "all you can eat bandwidth," including the cost for the equipment and Internet access (with a one-time installation fee of $750). For residential tenants who want high-speed Internet access in fully-wired buildings, Thorn offers a $100 per month service.

Michael [SI/AI Thread Comments]

Hi Jim, with the days of the Amati thread rapidly approaching what appears to be an end point, I humbly accept your Gold Medal Award and wish to thank you for all the insight and information you have so generously provided for nearly 2 years.
Just too bad Jonah was eaten by the Whale. I leave far richer in "astronomical websites", musical tunes to sing Amati's praises to, imagined luncheons in Italy, and having conversed with a "real rocket scientist".

P.S.Can you speed up when we see those new pictures of Mars? The suspense is killing me.

The next tune may have to be to Auld Lang Syne,
Michael

I don't see any reason for this thread to end.

I would like to see it continue as a DSL, Communications, High Tech, Emerging Technology thread. We have a great group of people. We know who to trust, who does valuable research worth it's weight in Gold.

Why start somewhere else? Hidden under Amati Investors, we can maintain our ongoing research with an excellent group of participants,
who seem quite content sharing excellent information.

The name Amati was chosen by Cioffi, as people close to him had said
he created an Amati. An Amati is a violin of excellent quality and heritage.

The finest violins, violas and cellos by makers such as Antonio Stradivari and Joseph Guarneri del Gesu presently sell in the millions of dollars each. These instruments have never been so far out of reach for top artists as they are today, due to immense price increases over the past few years. The epoch of great violin making in Cremona (the city of Amati, Guarneri, and Stradivari) reached its zenith during the
eighteenth century, truly an accomplishment which ranks as one of the wonders of the world. The technology of this making has been lost since that time. The tonal qualities of these instruments are so splendid that a top string player cannot reach the highest spiritual level of music without one. The best of these instruments are almost living entities, being so magical in the richness and tonal colors of sound they produce.

September 3 is the birth anniversary of Nicol• Amati, the scion
of the Italian family of violin makers for whom the Amati violin is
named. Nicol•'s great uncle Andrea founded the Cremona school of violin making, but it was Nicol• who attained great fame as a maker of superb instruments and a teacher of other violin-making greats. We remember Nicol• Amati with a look at others whose names are memorialized in their instruments.

Violino piccolo by Antonio and Girolamo Amati, Cremona, 1613. One of three Cremonese instruments known to have survived in original condition. The size of the neck and scroll suggest that this is not a child's instrument.
Ex. coll.: Andrew Fountaine. Witten-Rawlins Collection, 1984.

Among the many makers bearing the Amati name, the following are outstanding:

Andrea (Cremona, Italy, 1525-1611) is known as the founder of the great Cremonese school of violin making. Before he turned to making violins, he was making viols and rebecs. Instruments dated after 1584 are said to be the work of his sons Antonius and Hieronymus, and instruments known to be by Andrea are not numerous. It is claimed that he made 24 violins, 6 violas, and 8 cellos for Charles IX of France to be used at the court of Versailles, a few of which survive.

Genie Wie, who is using the exceptional Nicolo Amati violin c. 1635, recently took this fine instrument to Rice University in Texas, where she was one of only ten students selected to study with world renowned violinist Sergiu Luca. A veteran of Betty Haag's distinguished Suzuki Academy, Genie has performed for dignitaries all over the world including Pope John Paul II! She has toured the world over as well as winning numerous young artists competitions, and will no doubt be putting the Amati to good use in the future.

The same should be said of this thread.
