That is, the rich do support the poor, but not in proportion to their income. (And the way they arrange for part of the costs to be paid for by "the government" has been particularly ill thought out, with huge dollar differences based on small changes in income, LOL.) The program is balanced right on the backs of the middle class. And unlike previous (successful) progressive programs, this fact is going to be very very obvious right from the start. There's a lot of middle class people who would have voted for this as a progressive idea, but a lot more middle class voters who voted D because they thought they were going to get cheaper healthcare (by screwing the insurance companies or big business or some rich person). Obama sold it on the basis of greed rather than fairness. The middle class voters who voted D don't think that they're rich enough to be the ones who have to pay for it. I don't think it's politically possible to walk it back, to remarket it as a progressive program. You only get to blatantly lie about something like this once. After that, anything that comes out of your mouth will be ignored. What are they going to say, "I am not a liar"? The political debate will keep getting back to what they said, what they did when they had complete power. The Democrats are just going to have to eat it. Should be an entertaining election or two. But it's more than just that. I think one of the effects of this is to make the public less likely to jump on board *any* radical changes to the economy. That includes other liberal ideas like carbon taxes and anti-GMO stuff. All we have to do is say "These are ideas coming from the same people who brought you Obamacare. Should we risk destroying the economy? You shouldn't have trusted them on health care, why should you trust them now on energy or food?" -- Carl P.S. Obama is the most brilliant man to ever walk in the White House!
