The first major adoption was by Mercedes Benz for their SLK model. Daimler AG started working with Research Frontiers and their licensees to perfect the glass for the sunroof years before the 2011 announcement of it being available for sale.. Before the variable SPD film was adopted and trademarked by Daimler as "Magic Sky Control" there was extensive testing and tweaking, this development curve has now helped the licensees bring products to market more rapidly.

One of the most important features that Mercedes Benz uses in their presentation of "Magic Sky Control," is it's ability to keep the interior of car cooler----up to 18F. To ascertain this, they did their testing in Death Valley, CA. Because the technology is dark in the off state, this heat savings does not risk wear on the battery. This is especially desirable for countries in warmer climates.

This photo from Daimler shows the testing being done.

Because of the cooling of the interior of the car, this allows drivers to use less air conditioning and therefore lower CO2 emissions, something that is desired in green initiatives targeting the lowering of CO2 emissions.

Now that the largest panoramic roof every to be available with smart technology, has been announced with the addition of the S-Class, this savings on the compressor, provides an economic incentive for this to be offered as standard equipment in the future.

The link to Mercedes "Speed Date" is here. It didn't work for some in Post #2 so I'm reposting it.

slk.mercedes-benz.com

If this doesn't work in the future, google "Mercedes SLK Speed Date" and if still available, this should take you to an interactive video with this on the screen

You should have a photo of yourself or whomever is on the "date" to upload to enjoy the interactive aspect. It will ask you if throughout the video what you would like to have happen next. The SPD roof is the "Magic Sky Control" and you will see it when the roof is closed.

It's a fun promotional piece with or without the "roof" being part of it.
