Northern Cable First to Deploy 3Com MCNS Standards-Based Cable Modems

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 1997--Northern Cable Holdings Ltd. of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, today announced that after extensive hybrid one-way cable modem trials, it has selected 3Com Corp. to provide cable modems to enable its subscribers to have high-speed Internet access.
The company serves more than 100,000 subscribers in northeastern Ontario, and expects to add the residential Internet service in their 49,000 subscriber Sudbury market within the first quarter of 1998.
"The 3Com hybrid cable modem is the right solution to provide our community with high-speed Internet access," explained David Bronicheski, vice-president and general manager for Northern Cable. "It will enable us to offer customers fast Internet access before we complete our two-way cable plant rebuild."
Northern Cable will set-up their residential Internet service under a separately named division which will be announced locally in the next few months. This division will operate as a high-speed Internet service provider offering standard client services. The hybrid cable modem will be retailed locally by 3Com for purchase and installation by the customer.
