SEC will issue guide on year 2000 computer concerns

WASHINGTON (December 10, 1997 10:07 p.m. EST nando.net) - The Securities and Exchange Commission will offer new guidelines next week to help companies plan to solve computer glitches expected to arise at the turn of the century.

"We are taking this very seriously, to see what we can do quickly before the year 2000 to get better disclosure," said Brian Lane, who heads the SEC's division of corporation finance.

Lane said at a conference that the agency's legal guidelines, to be released next week, come as SEC officials heighten their scrutiny into company disclosures about the potential computer problem.
