Let's review the parable of the three servants.

biblegateway.com

Obviously this is a parable and He is speaking about spiritual gain, not material gain. But would He have used a temporal evil to illustrate a spiritual good? I don't think so.

BTW, I have always been curious how someone in the 1st century could have gotten a 100% capital gain honestly.

No he wouldn't have used a temporal evil to illustrate a spiritual good. Not speaking for Jesus that's just my opinion. Regarding the 100% capital gain, the parable says "after a long time the master returned.". What if he was gone for 10 years? I think the gain is reasonable if that servant was industrious.

Jesus sustained himself by living off of the charity of others but he earned that charity through his preaching. He didn't walk up the steps of the Roman curia and demand it. By the way how do you square the parable of the three servants with Mark 10:25?

He is speaking about spiritual gain, not material gain

Spiritual gain is an elusive quantity that can only be assessed through direct individual experience. It it the stuff of prayer and meditation, indeed, their purpose, their only purpose, whether one conceives of God with form or without form, or with other indescribable.

In any event Francis is talking about material gain. He has not dropped his tail.
