Cyto, thanks for the plug. My Dad used to be a technician at GTE also so I'm a fan of theirs too. I remember going into the CO's when he had to troubleshoot a problem. The old clunky electro-mechanical switches filled an entire building back then. Now much faster switches do the job in the space of an 8' rack. Add another rack and you've got WDM fiber head-end capability. Upgrade the fiber backbone with amplifiers and compensation, through in some software management and you're up and running with a 40 Gb/s point-to-point link. Ok, so there are a few other details but that's the basic idea. CIEN will make a killing at it.
