The 1001 Nights is a classic, though I have never read it. I am familiar with one of its translators, Sir Richard Francis Burton. A real Arabist.

Spoke Arabic and 38 other languages, too. He is I suppose most famous for disguising himself as an Arab pilgrim in order to go to Saudi Arabia on a hajj. He underwent an adult circumcision in order to not be thought of as an infidel, should someone be looking. If he had been discovered, he would have been killed so I guess it was worth it.

Also translated the Kama Sutra. A not-so-virtuous Victorian, but someone who lived life on a grand scale.
