the freakonmics author has a pretty good chapter on naming kids (no kidding!)

basically the premise is by the time the middle class adopts an 'upper class' name, it is passe'....then it hits 'bottom' (economically speaking) and becomes 'common'....bad news for early adopters 'middle class' because the name has already run it's course:
