Totally different. It is a given, a truism you cannot say any one person is better than the rest. We should all know that.

So when I say he was the greatest man of the last century, or that speaking well of him can never be hyperbole, I am presenting a sort of poetic opinion of just how great a man he was.

It is simply a way of expressing admiration way beyond the norm. It is not meant to be taken literally or quantified. I would say the same thing of Gandhi or MLK.

<<Just commenting on the similarities in expression..

"When speaking well of Nelson Mandela hyperbole is impossible!"

"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice....."

...totally different...just sorta similar

On top of that Barry Goldwater was nuts, so that is a big zero and you know what happens when you multiply anything with zero.
