Students would quietly assemble practicing & there would be a rack of spears & swords out for the advanced fighters. There was never a worry about gang or thugs messing aroun in that little park, even in his 70s this was still a master walking about, you had the same sense of being in a cage with a lion at times until he smiled. You see the chinese in the 1950s-60s were still secret about their fighting arts, there were about 10 other Kung Fu schools all practicing down stairs or secret upstairs halls off little alleys & sidestreets. They did not want Master Kuo to teach whites but he laughed them off & sent out challenges, come fight me if you dare! None accepted the challenge, so Chinese style, that settled that issue. But those were some pretty great masters too, that was just the force of command & respect he had in their community & reputation in China. Bruce Lee actually had to come over & fight with some, they were down on him , so he came over & kicked some ass, that settled that too. Before even going to him i had to practiced for two yrs with the quiet old graceful Master Chen who was himself 30yr student of old Master Kuo, then later found out he had been a colonel in the Taiwan army & editor of Taiwan's major newspaper. These fellows had seen & done much, you gave them much respect: . Kuo Lien Ying reportedly was a bodyguard for a while on the gold caravans through China, protecting the caravans on horseback with his unrivaled rope-dart techniques .He allegedly became a governor of a province in China, and later a general in the army of Chiang Kai Shek . In 1947, after the Communist takeover, he fled to Taiwan , became a congressman and opened up a martial arts school. Although he left his four wives and eight children in China when he fled Mao Zedong , Kuo wooed and married the 21 year old sister of one of his students, Ein Simmone Kuo.
