Craig

From what I've read about them over the last year their plan backfired when Cisco came out with a different routing scheme.

Smoke and mirrors does not work in this business.

<<So you're saying that Ipsilon doesn't pose a competitive threat to anyone? Nokia
wasted in $120 million in effect?>>

IMO, Ipsilon as a standalone company was a nonevent and wouldn't have made it.......too difficult to get critical mass against the big boys unless you have something that is clearly a compelling differentiator, which I don't think they had. However, they have engineering talent and are of value to someone looking to break into the layer three area of the teclo infrastructure. However, this is new ground for Nokia - I think CSCO (who was Ipsilon's direct target) would be more nervous if someone like LU, Nortel, or NN had bought them - the Nokia/Ipsilon combo probably won't cause CSCO to lose sleep.

ps - $120M is cheap for a buyout these days. If there was anything tangible there or soon coming to market that was really big the price would have been a lot (3X-5X) higher.

Keep your eyes on Juniper (they're private) - that's who makes CSCO nervous and who everyone else wants to dance with, but I bet it would take 500M to buy them.

Re: "Ipsilon Buyout",

With about $50M in venture funding to date, they must have seen the writing on the wall to sellout for $120M. Compare this to other acquisitions in this field, eg. Granite, Rapid City etc.,

Best Wishes,
MJ
