Longnshort, he started off as a militant, but later in his public life he worked toward trying to bridge the gap between white and black.

I'm not going to hold his failure to denounce his past radicalism against him. It's his legacy post-incarceration that matters. By then he was anything but a militant.

And yeah, Mandela was a left-wing socialist. If pointing that out rubs some people the wrong way, it's not my problem.
