Piyush "Bobby" Jindal Bobby Jindal Wants to Rob From the Poor to Give to the Rich —By Kevin Drum | Fri Jan. 11, 2013 9:03 AM PST Via Ed Kilgore, I see that Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal wants to raise taxes on the poor as a way of funding big tax cuts on the rich. He doesn't put it that way explicitly, of course ("It's time to...foster an environment where businesses want to invest and create good-paying jobs"), but it's hardly buried in the fine print, either. Basically, he wants to increase the sales tax (which hits the poor and middle class heavily) in order to eliminate income and corporate taxes (which are paid largely by the well-off). Is this because Louisiana's rich folks are being soaked and need relief? Not really. According to data from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, the poor in Louisiana currently pay about 10% of their income in state taxes. The rich pay about 5%. Too much! Bobby Jindal won't be happy until that ratio is more like the 10:1 that God intended. Welcome to some of that fresh new thinking from the up-and-coming young stars of the Republican Party that you've been hearing so much about lately. _________________ Bobby Jindal Here To Help Grandma Die Sad Painful Death, For Real, Hooray! by Rebecca Schoenkopf Well, at least it is not a post about guns, which is the only thing we can say about it without our head spinning around until it tears itself from our slender neck. News comes that by the end of the month, Louisiana will “save” all of $3 million by discontinuing hospice care for its poor folk. (It will not “save” anything, as the people who currently get hospice care will just cycle into ERs and ICUs instead.) Because poor folks with cancer were livin’ too high on the hog with their peaceful, palliated deaths surrounded by love ones and really nice nurses. Everybody here loved someone who went through hospice, right? And we all were grateful for the gentleness of their passing? WELL FUCK GRANDMA MILLIE IN THE ASS, there will be no more dying in her own bed, surrounded by her grandchildren (maybe saying the rosary? Grandma Millie always got great comfort from saying the rosary), with a nurse stopping in to check on things and drop off more morphine (which you will hide from your uncles and cousins in the back of a cabinet until the nurse comes back to pick up the leftovers, because you are not an idiot). Nope, Grandma Millie will be hooked up to some more machines, for a good month or so, just like she always dreamed. But as long as Bobby Jindal gets to turn down some Medicaid funding from the Kenyan impostor, it is totally worth it. It is time to halt the implementation of this creationist voucher program . It is increasingly clear that one of Governor Jindal’s primary education goals is the teaching of creationism. He supported, signed , and defended the Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA), Louisiana’s 2008 stealth creationism law, which allows teachers to sneak creationism into public school science classrooms by using creationist supplemental materials. Despite hearing from 78 Nobel laureate scientists who urged him to repeal the law because teaching creationism is both bad science and unconstitutional, Jindal instead defended the law.
