How relevant are historical (North American) O&G prices given the drastic change of global consumption patterns?

Two things: in '99 I'd been working in OSX for over 15 years already; in fact, ng prices spiked to $15 at one point and many of us were discussing the possibility of shortages looming. Then the shale gas boom quietly began and prices reverted to the mean for ng.
