I don't disagree with your perspective. I would say your point of view is consistent with what I meant by "hits" company. As a hits company, Apple has a legion of tremendously loyal and well-heeled customers which significantly increase their batting average. Part of that loyalty comes from ecosystem and ecosystem lockin.

As a phone company, the mandate would be for Apple to drive profit growth from phones. Increasingly, that looks like they have to expand their TAM to do so. As a hits company, Apple would be looking for ways to leverage their assets (services, customers, developer and carrier relationships, etc) to their next big profit driver, whatever it is. If may not be just hardware-- it could be a TV subscription service (with a hardware component).
