Both girls are as sweet a sugar. Not sure why, but it makes me very happy.

Here is one today. I kept asking about this musician I heard and who it was.

"Haha, I was going to try to surprise you, but you are persistent! I ordered that CD for you, and it should be there Friday =)

Dalton likes smoked salmon. That would be very sweet of you.

Love, Em"

I raised both very gently, but I also let them spread their wings when they were ready and I encouraged them to travel. Em went to Europe three times before she was 20 and spent a year in New Zealand going to school. she set it up.

I had dinner with a couple of dear friends and their two daughters are struggling. One married a religious zealot and tyrant. I met him during thanksgiving and was on his ass all night. He is going to take advantage of that poor girl her whole life. He is a real asshole.

But it was the mothers fault as she instilled fear in the girl with her own insecurities which she should have kept to herself. So the fearful girl then looks for a strong man, even an asshole.

Em was in school with her and took her one day on a magical mystery tour. Bought her a sweater and rented a cab and took a sauna. I always gave the girls enough money to pay for their poor friends to do stuff with them too. One of her best friends was really poor, but her friendship with Em motivated her to keep her grades up.

The girl at the thanksgiving dinner was recounting the story and said; "I never did anything like that before". And therein lies her problem.

When I go over the line (enter intellectual territory she feels is taboo (she is a retired teacher too, but was raised Catholic) in our discussions, she will audibly gasp. I sort of get a kick out of it now-lol.

Her husband is a bit like that. He asked me a question saying I have this crazy idea what do you think.?

They were flying back east and he was going to drive a new car back by himself and wondered if that was crazy. I could not believe he asked me that. So when I saw her I made fun of the question (thinking they were sort of kidding. They weren't), but she was even more adamant it was crazy

I said it was totally normal, nevertheless she ended up driving back with him.

Anyway that attitude is what I think cripples kids. Over protection and too many rules. When my girls went beyond their years in exploits (travel, drugs and boys) they would talk to me about it and I would just do what I felt was necessary e.g. getting them birth control pills when they asked and checking out the guy. And they asked.
