ZDTV And 3COM Corporation To Put Its Audience On TV With First Ever Netcam Network, Providing 10,000 Bigpicture Netcams To Viewers Business Wire - December 10, 1997 14:05 %ZDTV %3COM COMS %CALIFORNIA %COMED %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %TELECOMMUNICATIONS %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET %ENTERTAINMENT V%BW P%BW SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 1997-- New Cable Network Aligns With Communications Leader To Enlist Audience As On-air Commentators And Guests When cable television network ZDTV launches in First Quarter, 1998, its viewers will be able to "guest" on the network's shows while sitting in their own homes. ZDTV, America's first 24-hour television network focused on computing and the Internet, has formed an alliance with global networking leader 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) to distribute free of charge 10,000 Bigpicture(TM) video products with netcams. This technology will be distributed to everyone from cable operators and CEOs to soccer moms, from teenagers to journalists, from industry analysts to opinion leaders, turning the audience's role from passive viewer to active participant. 3Com's Bigpicture(TM) video netcam permits TV viewers with PCs using cable modems or 28.8 Kbps (or faster) modems to interact with the network. ZDTV viewers, via their computer, actually can become part of the programming by transmitting their own image to the studio live or by video emails. In providing viewers with real-time interaction with show hosts, guests and commentators, this technology gives meaning to ZDTV's tagline "Your Computer Channel" by enabling its audience to participate directly with programming from the comfort of their own homes. The distribution of Bigpicture(TM) netcams will create the opportunity for dialogue, improve content and create a feeling of community. The scalability of Bigpicture(TM) video cameras enables viewers interacting with the channel via cable modems in particular to take advantage of a huge advance in picture quality through higher frame rates. "We believe that distribution of products such as Bigpicture's(TM) netcams will help redefine television and more specifically the future of interactive programming, accelerating the growth of the cable television, computer and Internet industries," said Larry Wangberg, CEO of ZDTV. Wangberg continued, "ZDTV's goal is to provide added value for viewers and create partnerships with cable companies to support the developing cable modem market." "Bigpicture(TM) video products offer several ways for ZDTV viewers to dial into the network, providing groundbreaking live video interaction with program hosts and guests," said Neil Clemmons, vice president of the Personal Communications Division at 3Com Corporation. "The quality, scalability and flexibility of the Bigpicture(TM) video systems gives ZDTV viewers options that combine both television and the Internet." I went into the Post Office here, and they are selling merchandise - Christmas cards, ornaments, wrapping paper, gift bags. Not a lot mind you (there weren't rows and rows of stuff, just a freestanding kiosk display, Hallmark I think.)

Now I wonder how long before department stores sue the Federal government for unfair competition. I think I remember businesses suing prison systems for competitively bidding on contracts with their labor force. Maybe if the Post Office were to issue common stock, . . .
