"Stalin believed that he had enemies around every corner. Tending to be paranoid and to have what historian Robert Service has called a “sociopathic personality disorder,”

Anything can be called a disorder. The point is he was a brutal human being who went for #1. Any structure ruled outside of democracy (the Wolf Pack method) requires a wolf to lead. Such a leader really must be ruthless and cruel to survive. So once Stalin had decided to go for #1--the rest followed rationally as a survival necessity. In a Wolf Pack State, the second most ruthless person loses and is usually the first to be eliminated.

Some people still think that Stalin was ALWAYS operating secretly for the Catholic Church--as he was trained for years to the Priesthood and the higher secret orders. But that is not proven and it really doesn't matter. If he had not been a ruthless son of a bitch he would have died much younger than he did. Men who rule by force must humble other strong men or die.
