Ooh. I didn't mean to tack your "zero tolerance" statement to gun ownership. You used it for schoolyard shootings, and I took the liberty of applying it to all "improper" shootings, like domestic or accidental shootings. As for gun ownership as a whole, I see the logic of the NRA's stance that any attempt at accommodation with the forces behind gun control is not driven by the rules of "fair play". Without clearly laid out rules of what sort of gun ownership and use is legally protected (and where gun control advocates will voluntarily and expressly say "We'll stop here"), we might end up like England or Japan. And I wouldn't like that much at all. I am after all an interested party with five figures tied up in my hobby.
I've not kept up too closely with the NRA. But the NRA members I've met don't sit still for the drivel coming from the militias. I have a tough time imagining that the NRA endorses these fringe groups. At the risk of sounding incurably lazy, do you have any news handy in that regard?
I understand Heston. He's a little p.o'd, but when a good-faith gun owner like myself is faced with a threat to gun ownership (and by extension a disregard for the entire concept of personal liberty. Just laying out the argument, not taking it up) in the name of (highly debatable increments of) social safety, I can see the temptation to tell them just waht he thinks of them. I like a gentler approach, myself.
I'm game for picking up the topic on a sporadic basis!
