For Fowler and anyone who calls it a standard idiom, I'd start with Vidal's line and check if he's

"at least part American.” 10,000 wrongs don't make a right.

11 points was interesting. I didn't know about "collide."

From the page, though, was this, "Around this point in the list I would expect you're thinking to yourself:" I think the grammar is fine, but the expression "think to yourself" amuses me, I mean, you can't think to anyone else; but you can say something to yourself.
