Usually stocks that have a good run see their selling in January so that the gains don't have to be dealt with until the following years tax season. You sell your gainers in December if you lots of tax losses to use them against.

Most of the stuff I follow has weakened into December so I think it's likely that they gain some back in January as everyone gets back to work. We'll see.
