Of course they are true.
Many studies have shown that different species have different brain layouts and that this confers different mental abilities.

A recent study showed that one of the primary differences between pure bred Neanderthals and pure bred Homo Sapiens was in the area of the brain devoted to sight. The Neanderthal could process lower light levels and probably the lower contrast of ice and snow fields, but the Homo Sapiens were better at organizing their social calendar.
