That too may have been from the influence of the Vikings who dominated much of Britain and Ireland during this period. While many think of the Vikings as marauding raiding groups - reality was that they were well settled in these lands living amongst those already there. The lines of control shifting back and forth but the numbers of Northmen was much much more than our simplified history history portrays. Dublin for instance was a Viking city as was York in England.
