Bentway, at what point did Pope Francis say that the rich ought to be taxed at 75%? When did Pope Francis say that government wealth redistribution should be the means by which social and economic equality is achieved? Is Pope Francis an advocate of government takeover of major institutions such as health care?

Pope Francis correctly criticizes those who think free-market capitalism can substitute for human compassion, generosity, and sacrifice. (In that sense, he would also be a harsh critic of Ayn Rand.) I see that as necessary in order to dispel the notion that Catholicism and political conservatism are linked.

But there is nothing to suggest that Pope Francis is a socialist, despite what Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin have accused him of being. And for liberals to claim him as "one of their own" would be folly, for if anything, Francis is just as doctrinally conservative as any other modern-day pope.

(Do a search on his pro-life positions if you need proof of this. The mainstream media, of course, won't report this.)
