I think there is a strong likelihood we will see a Dow at 4000. When it was at about 6500 Templeton mentioned a 40% bear market. No one --including me-- believed him back in the early 1980s when he talked about a 3000 Dow in the 1990s. It seemed utterly impossible. If earnings decline and P/Es go to 10, it could be even lower than 4000. Neither of these possibilities is particularly absurd (except to certain bulls who, I expect, will now come piling in hurling abusive language).
