Sure, the military is a part of government. An its an area we should look to for cost savings given the seriousness of the fiscal situation of the US federal government. But its been a declining portion of the government for generations.

It still needs to be an area to find savings because there is a lot of spending there. But the real spending problem going forward is in the entitlements and interest on the debt. And big government isn't just a problem of spending, its also a problem of control, and the military doesn't exert too much control over most Americans, the rest of government is far more intrusive in to American's lives and business.
