My 150.00 donation gladly went out to UTEC today.

Congratulations to RKRW for "another truly astounding win..!"

ROBO - you gave him an excellent run for it.

Biotech was good to all of us in 2013. What a year...

All the best to everyone in 2014.

LJM

12/31/13 Update

It’s Official: RKRW is the winner of the 2013 Biotech Stock Charity Contest!!!
RKRW’s portfolio finished the year with a sensational 168.17% gain!!!
Congratulations RKRW!!!

As in prior years when he was the Contest winner, RKRW chose the United Teen Equality Center for his charity.
Here’s the link to UTEC’s website home page:

Here’s a direct link to where you can make a donation:

In past years, a few contestants have wanted to contribute to a charity I chose along with that of the winner’s charity (no obligation, of course). As I did last year, I’ll choose the East Bay College Fund as my charity. Here’s the link to their website:
eastbaycollegefund.org

Remarkably, RKRW has taken first place in 4 of the 8 Charity Contests for which I’ve been the scorekeeper (2006-2013). And he finished second in one of the Contests he didn’t win (2012).
However, for those eagerly awaiting RKRW’s 2014 Contest portfolio submission so they can dump their life savings into his stock picks, I should caution that RKRW is not infallible. In fact, his portfolios suffered substantial back to back losses in 2007 & 2008 (-25.3% & -46.5%).

Kudos are also deserved by ROBO, our 2013 Contest runner-up. ROBO’s portfolio finished the year with a spectacular 150.03% gain. (ROBO’s gain for the year would have been even bigger, at 157.22%, if his portfolio had been priced at the 12/31/12 close rather than the 1/3/13 close due to late submission.)

Time is running out to get your portfolio in for the 2014 Contest!
Here’s the link to where you can post your portfolio:

Sunday, January, 5, 2014, midnight, PST, is the portfolio submission deadline. But the earlier the better. (26 portfolios have already been posted publicly or by PM to me.)
Newbies, in particular, please read the Guidelines in the 2014 Contest Original Post before submitting a portfolio.
Please spread the word about the Contest on whatever biotech boards you frequent!

Meanwhile, it was an incredible year for biotechs and our amazing Charity Contest stockpickers!
When the closing bell rang for 2013, the Contest median was up a stunning 69.69% for the year! So our Contest stockpicking whizzes managed the formidable achievement of outperforming the Nasdaq Biotech Index 2013 gain of 65.61%.
Although the Nasdaq Composite Index also had an excellent year, its 38.32% gain was far outclassed by the biotech sector.
As noted above, our 2013 champ, RKRW’s portfolio, finished the year with a 168.17% gain, while second place, ROBO’s portfolio, ended up with a mere 150.03% gain.
Third place was locked in by GHMM’s portfolio with its 136.23% gain for the year, more than enough to make any fund manager proud. And I can’t resist pointing to my own portfolio’s 125.73% gain, putting me in fourth place the second year in a row.
At the year-end close, 37 of the 39 Contest portfolios were in the black with an impressive 22 of the 39 beating the NBI’s 2013 gain of 65.61%.
Below is 2013's Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for 2013.
I’ll post additional 2013 data over the next week or so.
Portfolio adjustments: None
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)

Best wishes to all for a wonderful 2014!

Peace & good health,
Bulba
