MCI Statement on DOJ Decision Denying BellSouth's Long Distance Bid PR Newswire - December 10, 1997 17:08 MCIC BLS %TLS %EXE V%PRN P%PRN WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement is attributable to Jonathan Sallet, MCI Chief Policy Counsel: "Today's recommendation by the Department of Justice to deny BellSouth's application to provide long distance service in Louisiana is a clear curtain- closer on BellSouth's ongoing drama to game the competition process. "Just two days after the DOJ's recommendation in November to deny BellSouth's 271 application in South Carolina, based in large part because of deficiencies in BellSouth's operations support systems (OSS), the Regional Bell filed the 271 application for long distance entry into Louisiana without complying with the law. BellSouth's Louisiana application also came on the heels of a decision by the Florida Public Service Commission finding BellSouth's regionwide OSS inadequate. "BellSouth is a regional monopoly using region-wide systems, so if those systems are lacking in South Carolina and Florida they are certainly lacking in Louisiana. Perhaps if BellSouth put as much energy into opening markets as it has into gaming local phone competition and trying to avoid the requirements of the Telecom Act, Louisianans would already enjoy the benefits of having a choice in local phone service -- more choices, lower prices, and better service."
