'Romans converted to Christianity to avoid supporting all those temples' theory..... the theory still stands just fine, one sees pressures closing modern chuches today in droves much as happened in Rome, there's an exact parallel.

You left out an original impetus to invent distance between themselves from strict orthodox Jewish practices, there was the Fiscus Judaica, tax on Jews which lasted 300yrs & the stigma of being an outlawed religion Religo Illicita. The later theologians sought basis in much from Hellene /Platonist thought to give some body & flesh of higher intelligence which also widened the gap from Jewish terminology/symbology again trying to set itself apart.

God's grace & deliverance or the Gods grace & deliverance, one set of superstitions got replaced with a new set, what follows in the ensuing centuries could only be termed Darwinian, no supernatural events were ever to manifest, but many forced conversions did. The saints began to subsume the mythological roles & status that the demi-god healers & heros of long antiquity once did, just as Jesus is deified & elevated to God status embodying all sublime virtue & heavenly intercessor though the story is a bit sparse. That story gets built up with time, merging later with a pantheon of saints.
