Excellent analytical piece on drugs and why they cost so much.

I'd like to read a paper on the comparative R&D contributions of government organizations like NIH vs. universities vs. private companies. And, of course, their extensive interactions. I know private companies love to scream to the heavens about how much they spend on R&D and on trials to prove the efficacy of their drugs, but my guess is that their research is heavily subsidized in a variety of ways by both the govt and universities. Which, perhaps it is unnecessary to add, I don't really mind. What I mind is the pretense that they don't get help, that they just get burdened by govt regulations (I mean, really, who needs to see if the drugs that companies want to sell actually, you know, do something valuable to ameliorate the condition? Can't we just take the companies and the doctors' word for it?), that that is why they have to charge so much for their drugs.

Society has to sort out the new health care capabilities in a measured and intelligent way. That means a discussion. And we may need to change norms and mores and engage in brand new ideas, like maybe a society should not be looking for a profit in healthcare!

If society organizes health care according to modern day health care social science, it will be the best approach.

Many people know how to do this stuff, they just lack the political backing to do it.
