Final block trades, Wed., 12/10:

Again, most of these trades were at the ASK. This says
that there is (limited) institutional buying. There does
not appear to be any institutional selling of any moment:

>>>Style, Agreed, LU might be dead, but then there's always NT, IBM, BAY and lest we forget CPQ.................Gary. Buyout rumors will continue to be a permanent part of the landscape as it relates to ASND.<<<

I'm with you there. ASND just wouldn't be the same without them! ;o)

I do find the prospects of NT as improved and intriguing, following the recent developments over the past week or so. Here are my humble thoughts that I posted at the Fool in response to another individual...

>>>While I've always been skeptical of whether or not LU was/is interested in ASND, I agree that NT might be another story. Note that you haven't seen them buying smaller networkers piecemeal the way LU has been.<<<

I agree. While LU has its hands tied when it comes to large aquisitions, it's archnemesis NT is surely watching LU's activities like a hawk. The aquisitions of Octel, Livingston, and Prominet by Lucent have greatly enhanced the company's networking portfolio and reinforces just how determined LU is, to become a player in RA/FR/ATM networking.

Meanwhile, one of the arguments as to why NT might pass ASND by as an aquisition is because NT is a reseller of Shiva LAN gear and has had long-standing relationships with the networker. If you are curious how Shiva's equipment in competition with ASND's match up, you should read the "RAS Benchmark report" from Data Communications that I posted today (forwarded from SI). Using RAS for an example, although SHVA's LANrover sported the 2nd-highest throughput
rate at 144 simultaneous users, the LANrover could not successfully handle higher user loads than 144 users per chassis -- the ASND MAX and the COMS hyper TCH managed up to the test's 200 maximum with flying colors.

The impressive portfolio of industry leading innovative RA/FR/ATM gear that ASND offers, goes far and beyond what SHVA offers. This string of networking-related aquisitions by LU will surely press the more urgent need for NT to make likewise moves, or it risks allowing its rival to gain a lead. There is also speculation that NT might also be looking at CS, although I believe ERICY has an investment in that company, and may be the more likely
suitor for CS, especially after its rival Nokia's recent move to snap up Ipsilon -- indicating possible future moves at further networking aquisitions.

I'm certainly pleased by LU's recent aquisitions...I don't believe they have the means to pay the price that ASND deserves to fetch in a takeover, and it helps to increase the possibility that NT might be seriously considering ASND and determining whether its a good fit. An aquisition of ASND by NT would effectively eclipse LU's aquisitions of Livingston and Prominet...a very strategic move.

Of course, this is all just my speculation. I don't pay much credence to rumors and the like, and I am perfectly comfortable with ASND's prospects in 1998 based on its own merits. I still fully expect the company to beat earnings Jan 22.
