Certainly, there is that element involved in the "politics" of welfare, but IMHO there also the people on it who are milking it and who could get on with their lives, or people who are trapped in it and would like to be untrapped. I think the welfare to work fare was step in the right direction thought not able to help all

The role of the welfare state in the US, to me, is a complex question, and the politics of it are volatile. Certain advocacy groups have an interest in keeping that system growing and expanding, to the detriment of the people who could achieve independence with some in assistance in that direction. And I sometimes think both sides just vote their base on it regardless instead of tackling the harder solutions because of political expediency.

So we will have to continue to try unravel this Gordian Knot in a balanced way. Not an easy task. What is easy is to just pick one element of the problem and try to beat the opposition over the head with that. That doesn't get us anywhere though IMHO.
