It's illogical and basically saying Ford was a dumb guy who couldn't do simple arithmetic. I don't think anyone thought or thinks that the entire raise to $5 was only going to be used to buy his cars....but it did raise the purchasing power (something you love to talk about) so the employees were able to enjoy an improved standard of living in all aspects of their lives. Out paying your competition is routinely used by successful companies to insure getting the highest quality employees out producing your competition with higher quality products.... I gave as an example what Microsoft pays it's interns in salary and perks compared to the thousands of very bright college students who are working internships for no pay at all and also paying their rent and living expenses... Ford's $5 included incentives to reach production objectives and some social objectives. Many companies of the day were very paternalistic including IBM when I started there. Much of Silicon Valley is that way today. Keeping the unions away from the door was also a big reason to improve the lives of the workers.. IBM was terrified of union activity. BTW, If a raise in minimum wage is not worthwhile, how can you argue any raise is worthwhile?
