According to what we know now, everything in the universe is moving away from everything else, and it's all ACCELERATING. We used to think it was slowing, and would eventually collapse back in for another big bang.

We have no real idea why, yet. Just some pretty wild theories.>>

My guess. I have been reading a book called "Nothingness" by Henning Genz for a decade. It is way over my head, so all I get are bits and pieces and of course am not even sure of myself with any of it. But here is what I think he was saying. He is a German (naturally-lol) theoretical physicist.

It has also been a while since I read him, but think I will start up again. I always found it interesting even though I could barely understand it.

The book is about vacuums and vacuum energy. All vacuums have energy. So here is how I remember it in my minds eye. And this will not be correct, but the best I can do.

First the big bang literally creates a universe where nothing existed before. Nothing is impossible to imagine (try it). But as the universe gets larger the vacuum energy increases. Now as I recall, the vacuum energy works opposite to gravity i.e. it pushes, not pulls. And ZI think he said the farther away the strong it gets?? That sure seems wrong-lol.

And at some point the universe has more vacuum energy power than gravity so the universe expands faster and faster as the vacuum energy increases simply by the universe getting larger.

I will start reading it again tonight. I put it on my bed and if I can see where I got stuff wrong or missed something I will post it.

PS even in vacuums, virtual particles are popping in and out of existence continually. When a virtual particle is pulled through an energy field it becomes real. That is also how the Higgs field works I think, so it may be the same thing.

I am so far out of my league here.
