As the wikipedia pointed out, the big difference he saw was those making wages at least had a chance on being truly free, which is owning their own business or farm. The fact that we have institutionalized that would have appalled him. Harry Turtledove, in his Southern Victory series, has the South winning the Civil War and Lincoln never gets assassinated. He does become a Marxist, Karl was an admirer of his, and he founds a Socialist party. If you read a lot of his writings, this is not an implausible scenario. There is every reason to believe that had Booth not killed him, he would have taken on the robber barons and boosted the nascent populist movements.
