Plenty of bogus numbers are tossed around, but it is pretty obvious they are bogus. So why doesn't some investigative journalist try to actually get a reasonable estimate?

Investigative journalism? What is that??...........you know I'd really like to believe some of the stuff I've seen.....but I simply can not realistically accept anything as fact any more.......I figure if the rates go up sharply again next year or there is a big multi billion dollar bailout, the real numbers must be bad.

I hate to say it but there are very few "investigative journalists" who would be capable of a proper analysis of this sort. People who become journalists, like Ezra Klein, tend not to be able to think their way out of a paper bag.

Someone like Megan McArdle or John Stossel could do the work. But the Left would never take it at face value.
