In deference, heat waves are latched onto as evidence of global warming, so payback is to be expected in cold spells.

There have been a few useful papers on extreme weather and climate change, but in general, the latest weather event of any flavor is a bit hard to correlate with the current climate change. Interestingly, the big reinsurance Cos have a great interest in the topic, and have done some of the better analysis. For obvious reasons.
