Sure, but even things like sea ice melt have "weather" events. The longer term trend is very clear, but the few year trend not so much. While Arctic ice decline is proceeding generally much faster than the IPCC "official" projections, still a lot of reputable climate scientists looking at the 2007 collapse got a good deal more worried, and then things rebounded a bit, or rather, they didn't continue to accelerate in the manner that 2006 - 2007 might have hinted. The real problem with climate change is that actual change occurs slowly enough that most people brush it off. It will take real negative impacts before the nutcases wake up, and then unfortunately the system kind of has significant inertia, so ouch...
