The question is, what makes up a rising trend. The 2nd and 3rd string minds take some averaged points at the beginning and end of data and are capable of drawing a straight line. It take little effort to make the simple minded happy happy.

The first string mind, especially those whose doctoral thesis is. An entropic approach to the analysis of time series look with a much sharper mind.

For the simple minded (2nd, 3rd, 4th string) this shows what can make a rising trend in a time series. Add sinusoidal components with known phase relationships and voila you have a rising trend over some time.

When that same 1st string mind does an analysis of temperature data past. He correlates the temperature measurements with know physical forces affecting the earth and finds.
