I hear they don't have em there You hear all sorts of crazy things. They apparently don't have direct personal income taxes, but the government effectively owns much of the economy, and taxes much of what it doesn't directly own. It collects a percentage on all transactions with state marketing agencies (which might not be a big deal in most countries, but is in North Korea, since they control much of the economy) and there are taxes on water, seeds, fertilizer, and farm equipment, then a tax of 15% of the crop that farms produce and on certain " household amenities". Also All foreign-invested enterprises are subject to income, property, turnover, and local taxes. See nationsencyclopedia.com "taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society" Maybe a few percent of the taxes we pay fall in to that category. Most of government spending has little to do with that idea in direct terms. A larger chunk would be to protect society from outside threats, but I think you want that portion reduced and even at current levels its a shrinking minority of government spending in the US.
