--Meanwhile CIEN has lost it's resident genius. David Huber, the WDM inventor, left the company in June about $300 million richer. Some see his departure as a big loss. Still, analysts give CEO Pat Nettles high marks for savvy management. Nettles a former physicist, "has a deep grasp for engineering concepts," Magill said.

--For his part, Bayless, who also helped launch Compaq, is holding onto his $2 million investment. "This is the time in telecommunications," he said.

--Analysts expect Ciena's earnings to rise 30% and revenue upwards of 50% in '98.
