Industry Leaders Use Common MCNS-DOCSIS Silicon Platform From Broadcom
Broadcom Corp., Wednesday announced that Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc., Intel Corp., Motorola Corp., Samsung Electronics Corp. Ltd., Sony Corp., and Thomson Consumer Electronics plan to use its MCNS-DOCSIS silicon platform in their cable modems.
These companies join a growing list of cable, consumer and networking companies using Broadcom's silicon platform, which include 3Com, Bay Networks, Cisco Systems, Com21, NextLevel Systems and Scientific-Atlanta. This industrywide adoption of Broadcom's silicon platform is a significant positive for the cable modem market, since it has enabled a critical mass of feature-diverse cable modems that all share a common basis of MCNS interoperability.
Broadcom's silicon platform complies with MCNS-DOCSIS, which was developed to insure multi-vendor interoperability between cable modem equipment. The company's MCNS-DOCSIS silicon platform is the first available integrated silicon solution that provides the upstream, downstream and media access controller (MAC) functions for both cable modems and cable modem termination systems (headends).
"Broadcom is pleased to have a list of customers that includes the leading equipment manufacturers in the consumer electronics market, the networking market and the traditional cable set-top market," said Henry Nicholas, Broadcom's president and chief executive officer. "The availability of our silicon solution will allow manufacturers to uphold their commitment to providing inexpensive, interoperable cable modems through retail distribution channels by early 1998, which will be the driving force behind the explosive growth of high-speed data-over-cable services."
Broadcom recently announced the availability of its MCNS-DOCSIS silicon platform, which consists of the BCM3116 QAMLink Demodulator, BCM3037 QAMLink Burst Modulator and BCM3220 QAMLink Media Access Controller (MAC) for cable modem subscriber units, and the BCM3033 QAMLink Modulator, BCM 3137 QAMLink Burst Demodulator, and BCM 3210 QAMLink MAC for cable modem termination systems. Broadcom also announced the availability of its MCNS-DOCSIS cable modem and cable modem termination system reference designs.
Broadcom is a worldwide leader in the broadband communications market, providing integrated, system-level silicon solutions to manufacturers of 100Base-T networking, cable modem, digital cable-TV set-top box, xDSL and digital broadcast satellite equipment. The company's QAMLink digital transmission architecture has been adopted by the leading manufacturers of cable modems and digital cable-TV set-top boxes.
